CARB requirements are now front and center for the sign industry in California.
CSA conducted its 1st seminar and dinner meeting in northern California OCT 25th, at the Holiday Inn – Dublin, CA. Addressed during the seminar was a recap of CARB (California Air Resources Board) regulations and enforcement taking place, pertaining to Diesel Equipment. It is important to note that non-compliant diesel trucks will not be re-registered by the DMV starting January 1st, 2020. In addition, your low mileage trucks may not qualify for an extension after 2019.

Currently with Oculus Business Coaching, John leads business development and strategic alliances across the country as its Chief Efficiency officer. Oculus provides consultation and executive coaching programs designed to help sign manufacturers make significant improvements by implementing systemic solutions to increase productivity & business valuation.

SoCal Horse Race Event in Del Mar 2018!
Join us as Thoroughbred athletes and world class jockeys take to the track for the most exciting 2 minutes in sports! Del Mar Race Tracks, Where CSA Comes to Play! Join sign industry professionals, both members and non-members, for an event to highlight camaraderie and networking! Marvel as the Thoroughbreds dance on “toes” as they are led from the paddock to the track. Watch as the trainers saddle and prepare for the race. Listen as the bugler sounds the call to post. Before you know it, the caller is heard from every corner of the park “racing” and the horses are off dashing for the finish line.
The horses thunder down the stretch towards the finish line – CSA Members can’t help but stand up screaming encouragement. As the horses reach the wire, we erupt into victory hugs and high-fives all around. All part of the amazing fun!

Meet our Guest Speaker, Gary Flamm and learn the ins and outs of Title 24 Compliance – How to Deal with Enforcement.
Gary has made over 200 presentations and training courses on the Title 24 Lighting Standards and the Title 20 Appliance Efficiency Regulations. After working for twelve years with the California Energy Commission (CEC) in the Building Standards Development Unit, he is “in the trenches” and understand the issues, rational, and intent of the Lighting Standards. Gary is anxious to help CSA members through the Title 24 process, from permit to inspection! Part 2 of this education program will provide insights into CARB, California Air Resources Board: Recognizing air pollutants & Effect on the Economy of the state.

The 2018-19 CSA fiscal year began OCT 1, with a busy calendar in the planning. CSA’s Board of Directors, Executive Committee, and Staff, have all expressed their continued commitment to education and training, as well as the programs and benefits available to CSA members and the on-premise sign industry. Neal Tibbs, CSA President (2018-19) and Vice President, Ad Art Sign Company, is looking forward to reaching out to as many CSA member companies as he can over the next year, with CSA’s #1 Goal For This Year Being “training our workforce”. What a Year!
Moving at the Speed of Business!
Take a deep breath. The 2017-18 CSA year is drawing to a close. This past year has been a busy one, with programs and benefits that have benefited CSA members and the on-premise sign industry.
With a commitment to education and training, STEPS (Sign Training & Education Program Series) kicked off with Matt Davis from Sign Designs, Modesto, being the first to enroll – his first term concentrating on electrical safety. In addition to STEPS, five seminars were conducted, two in the north and three in the south; topics included Standardized Engineering and Various New Laws-2018. Education was not limited to a classroom setting; tours of Golden 1 Center in Sacramento and MONA (Museum of Neon Art) in Glendale certainly made learning fun!

CSA Convention of 2018 a Resounding Success

The California Sign Association held its annual convention in Garden Grove, CA. on August 29-31. Great camaraderie and fun were had by all!
CSA Hosts a Great Event
Of course, the Annual Membership Meeting on Wednesday, and the Banquet and Installation of the new Board on Thursday were of high importance. But we know how to work hard, and play hard! At CSA's annual membership meeting, President Dennis Lytle brought the members up to date information on CSA matters. Jeff Aran, CSA legal counsel, a government affairs recap, and the election of the board of directors for the year 2018-19 was conducted. We also observe the election of next year’s officers: Dennis Lytle, Federal Heath Sign Company (Immediate Past President), Neal Tibbs, Ad Art, (President), Rob Riley, Keystone Technologies (1st Vice President), Barbara Navarro, SPESCO (2nd Vice president), and Pete Michelini,Sign Designs (Secretary/Treasurer).
Wednesday was the start of the convention, with a great round of golf being played at the Anaheim Hills Golf Course in Anaheim, CA. Registration began at 9 o'clock in the morning. The tournament commenced with an energetic group testing their skills on the driving range, followed by a Golf Ball Drop contest with CSA legal counsel Jeff Aran dropping the bucket of balls, before forty-eight golfers hit the course at 10:00am, finishing up about 3:00pm. The last meeting of the 2017-18 CSA Board of Directors took place that afternoon, then it was on to bowling at Bowlmor Lanes. Golf Tournament Awards & Recognition took place at Bowlmor Lanes at 7:00pm, just prior to the Convention Opening Party. 75 were in attendance at the bowling bash: Guests networked, and demonstrated new bowling techniques 😉 All enjoying plenty of food and drink. Several CSA bowlers appear to be regulars at their alleys back home, judging by their scores!

Informative Networking at its Best
SoCal CSA members who attended the May 15 seminar at the Catch Restaurant in Anaheim, were enlightened on the “New Tax Law & How it Impacts Your Business” presentation, conducted by Aaron McLennan, EA. Aaron patiently outlined a number of items in the previous and new tax laws, encouraging all to engage and ask questions along the way. he covered the new $1.5 trillion tax law, the biggest change to the tax code in a generation, and the anticipated opportunities and challenges for the sign, graphics and visual communications industry. All in attendance appreciated the guidance — Thank you Aaron!
The seminar was followed by Networking with cold drinks in hand, then a fabulous dinner and presentation in our private dining room at the Catch. The Dinner was attended by 27 people, all anxious to hear about “Marketing & Building an Ideal Client List”, presented by Raoul Piette, with CUSELLERATION.
The dinner meeting concluded with CSA updates on education, government affairs, and upcoming events.
An enjoyable evening was had by all!
Tax Laws Take Center Stage on May 10
CSA returned to Lodi, CA on May 10th, with what has become an annual luncheon meeting at Wine & Roses. Members and guests began to arrive at noon. Ultimately, 19 people were in attendance for lunch and a seminar, “New Tax Laws,” with a warm welcome and introduction of CSA’s first STEPS (Sign Training & Education Program Series) candidate Matt Davis, Sign Designs (Modesto).
The tax laws seminar was presented by Tim Dobler, EA. Tim shared information on the new $1.5 trillion tax law, the biggest change to the tax code in a generation, and the anticipated opportunities and challenges for the sign, graphics and visual communications industry. All in attendance appreciated Tim’s insight and guidance, covering both the business and personal tax ramifications.
Following the presentation, the meeting concluded with numerous CSA updates pertaining to member programs and discounts, sign industry challenges currently being addressed, and upcoming events.
“Extremely informative” was the feedback from attendees.
