• Digital Sign Ban Revisited in El Dorado

Several years ago, CSA was instrumental in securing a code revision in El Dorado County that allowed digital signage.

We met on site at night at a car dealership in Placerville with several Planning officials and Watchfire (with its mobile digital sign vehicle) to show them firsthand how digital signage works. As a result, the county adopted reasonable regulations allowing digital signage under specified conditions. In 2025, the county rescinded them, but now, in 2026, due to business community feedback the county is revisiting its decision.

In an article written by Noel Stack and published on January 21, 2026 titled “Digital sign ban gets another look” on the villagelife.com website, the article states:

“Community feedback has prompted the El Dorado County Board of Supervisors and staff to revisit a restrictive digital sign ban approved as part of last September’s Sign Ordinance update. The board unanimously voted earlier this month to initiate the process to propose amendments to Title 130 of the El Dorado County Zoning Ordinance regarding digital signs and other related topics. Tom Purciel with El Dorado County long range planning spoke at the Jan. 6 meeting, asking for specific feedback and direction on whether the board desired to keep the ordinance update as is or remove/modify the digital signs ban, and provide direction to ensure digital signs meet the needs of communities while minimizing possible impacts. Based on feedback since the rollout of the revised ordinance, it has been asserted the digital sign ban was “too narrowly written and inadvertently banned digital signs that were desired in the county,” Purciel noted.”
