The 2015 CSA Annual Convention and California Sign Industry Summit came to a very successful conclusion on Friday the 28th. All indications are that everyone had a great time. Some comments heard while attendees were leaving; “Best CSA Event I have ever attended,” “Easily Best CSA Convention I’ve been to,” “I wish my wife had come to this one – she would have loved it!”
“I wish my wife had come to this one – she would have loved it!”
The fun and excitement started on Wednesday evening with bowling at the East Village Tavern & Bowl. 86 people attended this exciting event, sponsored by CNP Signs & Graphics and Signtech Electrical Advertising. Twelve lanes were set aside just for CSA, with The Back Yard Grill the theme for the food served – the general consensus was the Mac & Cheese was something to behold – along with the Tavern Burger Sliders, Grilled Marinated Artichokes, and Caesar Salad to round out the menu.

CSA FISHING TRIP 2015
CSA FISHING TRIP 2015
With the 13th Annual Fishing Trip behind us, I would like to share what you missed for those who did not attend – This year was completely different than our previous ones, due to the warmer waters.
We left the dock at 5:15am and I informed the anglers on board that we were not going to Catalina and I could hear the cheers from everyone. It was only a one hour ride to our first location and a few yellowfin were caught. We spent the remainder of the day traveling to different locations and by the end of the day, there were nine yellowfin – 25 to 35 pounds each – and two Dorado. The winner of the jackpot was Andrew Russell with YESCO!
This was an exciting trip with lots of adrenaline flowing!
Hope to see everyone next year!

BREAKING: US Supreme Court Ruling is Good News for Sign Industry
US Supreme Court Rules Against City in Church Sign Case
“Far reaching decision will affect sign codes throughout the country.” ~ Jeff Aran, The Sign Lawyer
In Reed v. Town of Gilbert, the Good News Community Church was cited for exceeding the time limits for displaying temporary directional signs and failing to include an event date on the signs. Their website includes this friendly message, “On the south side of Elliot, Just west of Gilbert Road. Signs will direct you to the room where we meet.”
Reversing the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals in a much anticipated decision, the US Supreme Court ruled June 17 that the city of Gilbert, AZ sign code was an unconstitutional restriction on speech. The court held, among many other points, that the code is an example of content-based discrimination, which “singles out specific subject matter for differential treatment, even if it does not target viewpoints within that subject matter.” The court also ruled that a code which is content-based on its face is nonetheless subject to “strict scrutiny” analysis, regardless of the government’s motive, content-neutral justification, or lack of disagreement with the ideas contained in the regulated speech.
As a result, sign codes which include provisions favoring certain messages based on who is “speaking” will be subject to constitutional attack. CSA will provide a full analysis shortly.
