CSA Capitol Recap
On May 21, fourteen CSA Officers, Staff, Directors and members joined together at CSA’s annual Day at the Capitol in Sacramento to meet with 21 Senate and Assembly legislative offices whose members serve on the Business & Professions, Economy and Transportation committees.
Our focus was on education of elected officials and their staff about what CSA is and what we do, to voice concerns over “skilled and trained” workforce issues and regulatory overreach, as well as to promote virtual permit procurement and virtual inspection opportunities, and the benefits of standardized engineering.
The day was a wonderful experience for those in attendance; positive feedback was received and personal stories shared, as the group reconvened at the end of the session at the Fox & Goose Pub to reflect on the day’s activities.
“The Day at the Capitol was well organized and coordinated,” with a Thank You to Jeff Aran for his efforts. If the intent is to raise awareness of the on-premise sign industry in California with our elected representatives, I think this event meets that objective.
That said, what has always amazed me during these office visits is how unaware legislative interns and assistants are of the sign industry. You hear “I didn’t know that” quite a bit. How many of the issues we discussed make it to the awareness of the Assembly member or Senator, I don’t know, but the intent was always expressed.”
Best regards,

“For me, while it is great to get a chance to provide visibility for the sign industry to the legislature, the best part of the day was enjoying the company of my fellow CSA members. It was an opportunity to get to know each other better and share in the common struggles we all face in business. Of particular note was the last office we visited (I forget which legislator), the grandfather of the staffer we met with had worked in the sign industry for years, at Pacific Neon. Ryan knew him well, so it was a great personal connection. It really humanized the meeting.”
Thanks.

In addition to the referenced visits on May 21st, CSA Executive Director Roy Flahive and Legal Counsel Jeff Aran, met the day prior with leadership of the California Dept of Tax & Fee Administration (formerly the Board of Equalization), to review member concerns over unreasonably burdensome tax audits.
